Dear _____,

You have the power to change legislation, and I urge you to make changes to the Municipal Act as quickly as possible.

There have been egregious acts of sexual violence and harassment perpetrated by municipal councillors in too many Ontario municipalities including London, Ottawa, Hamilton, Brampton, Barrie, Durham, and Mississauga.

The current codes of conduct do not have enough teeth, nor the framework to appropriately address cases of harassment - baseline adherence to workplace violence and harassment policies will.
It is clear that the present penalties of a three month suspension of pay and/or loss of a committee or board seat are not enough to maintain public trust. There needs to be a process of removal for the most egregious behaviour - just as there is in any other workplace in Ontario.

I am a voting member of the public, and I request that the Legislature of Ontario, which has the authority here, examine and amend the Municipal Act to address these concerns.
